Acetone is an extremely polar substance and very good solvent. Acetone dissolves almost all organic compounds and because inks and stains of organic nature are designed in a way as to only be dissolved by like substances, thus making ink no challenge. On the other hand, nail polish remover is essentially non pure acetone, so there is a very similar effect.
